    Occupational Factors Associated with Changes in the Body Mass Index of Korean Male Manual Workers

    OBJECTIVES: This study was carried out to analyze and compare the occupational factors that could influence changes in body mass index (BMI) in male manual workers stratified into short-term and long-term work experience groups. METHODS: The subjects were 299 male manual workers (sampled systematically) from 27 workplaces, who had undergone travelling medical examinations at a university hospital between March 28 and May 10, 2013, and had also undergone medical examinations at the same hospital in 2012. Their general and occupational characteristics were investigated through a structured, self-administered questionnaire. The BMI at each point in time was calculated based on the anthropometric results of the medical examinations. Multiple regression analyses were conducted on outcomes of the BMI change and predictors composed of the general and occupational characteristics, with the subjects stratified into groups with 5 years or less (short-term) versus more than 5 years (long-term) of work experience at the present post. RESULTS: In the short-term work experience group, the BMI increases of 3-shift workers and groups reporting disagreement with feeling “insufficient job control” and “lack of reward” at work, two of the subscales of job stress, were significantly higher than those of daytime workers and high-stress groups, respectively. In the long-term work experience group, However, although the BMI increase for 3-shift workers was also significantly higher than that of daytime workers, none of the job stress factors were significantly associated with a BMI increase, whereas the social factors of education and marital status were significant, and some lifestyle factors (such as smoking and regular exercise) were also significant. CONCLUSION: This study showed that, except for 3-shift work, the factors associated with BMI increase could differ depending on the length of job experience. Consequently, different strategies may be needed for workers with short-term versus long-term job experience when designing interventions for preventing their obesity

    Acute Symptoms after a Community Hydrogen Fluoride Spill

    OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to describe the demographic characteristics, and clinical signs and symptoms of patients who visited a general hospital because of the release of chemically hazardous hydrogen fluoride that occurred on September 27, 2012 in Gumi City, Korea. METHODS: The medical records at 1 general hospital 9 km from the accident site were reviewed using a standardized survey format. There were 1,890 non-hospitalized and 12 hospitalized patients exposed to hydrogen fluoride between September 27 and October 13 2012. RESULTS: Among the 12 hospitalized patients, 11 were discharged within 1 week and the other was hospitalized for 10 days. The chief complaints were respiratory symptoms such as hemoptysis and shortness of breath, gastrointestinal symptoms, neurologic symptoms, sore throat, and lip burn. The number of non-hospitalized patients exhibited a bimodal distribution, peaking on the first and twelfth days after the accident. Their chief complaints were sore throat (24.1%), headache (19.1%), cough (13.1%), and eye irritation (9.2%); some patients were asymptomatic (6.2%). Patients who visited the hospital within 3 days (early patients) of the spill more often had shortness of breath (27.0%) and nausea (6.3%) as the chief complaints than patients who visited after 3 days (late patients) (3.5% and 2.6%, respectively). However, cough and rhinorrhea were more common in the late patients (14.0% and 3.3%, respectively) than in the early patients (5.0% and 0.0%, respectively). Patients who were closer to the accident site more often had shortness of breath and sputum as the chief complaints than patients who were farther away. The mean serum calcium concentration was 9.37 mg/dL (range: 8.4–11.0 mg/dL); none of the patients had a decreased serum calcium level. Among 48 pulmonary function test results, 4 showed decreased lung function. None of the patients had abnormal urine fluoride levels on the eighth day after exposure. CONCLUSIONS: Patients hospitalized due to chemical hazard release of hydrogen fluoride had acute respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurologic health problems. Non-hospitalized patients have acute symptoms mainly related to upper respiratory irritation

    Rapid and selective concentration of bacteria, viruses, and proteins using alternating current signal superimposition on two coplanar electrodes

    Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is usually effective close to the electrode surface. Several techniques have been developed to overcome its drawbacks and to enhance dielectrophoretic particle capture. Here we present a simple technique of superimposing alternating current DEP (high-frequency signals) and electroosmosis (EO; low-frequency signals) between two coplanar electrodes (gap: 25 mu m) using a lab-made voltage adder for rapid and selective concentration of bacteria, viruses, and proteins, where we controlled the voltages and frequencies of DEP and EO separately. This signal superimposition technique enhanced bacterial capture (Escherichia coli K-12 against 1-mu m-diameter polystyrene beads) more selectively (>99%) and rapidly (similar to 30 s) at lower DEP (5 Vpp) and EO (1.2 Vpp) potentials than those used in the conventional DEP capture studies. Nanometer-sized MS2 viruses and troponin I antibody proteins were also concentrated using the superimposed signals, and significantly more MS2 and cTnI-Ab were captured using the superimposed signals than the DEP (10 Vpp) or EO (2 Vpp) signals alone (p < 0.035) between the two coplanar electrodes and at a short exposure time (1 min). This technique has several advantages, such as simplicity and low cost of electrode fabrication, rapid and large collection without electrolysis

    The Fruit Hull of Gleditsia sinensis

    Lung cancer has substantial mortality worldwide, and chemotherapy is a routine regimen for the treatment of patients with lung cancer, despite undesirable effects such as drug resistance and chemotoxicity. Here, given a possible antitumor effect of the fruit hull of Gleditsia sinensis (FGS), we tested whether FGS enhances the effectiveness of cis-diammine dichloridoplatinum (II) (CDDP), a chemotherapeutic drug. We found that CDDP, when administered with FGS, significantly decreased the viability and increased the apoptosis and cell cycle arrest of Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cells, which were associated with the increase of p21 and decreases of cyclin D1 and CDK4. Concordantly, when combined with FGS, CDDP significantly reduced the volume and weight of tumors derived from LLC subcutaneously injected into C57BL/6 mice, with concomitant increases of phosphor-p53 and p21 in tumor tissue. Together, these results show that FGS could enhance the antitumor activity of CDDP, suggesting that FGS can be used as a complementary measure to enhance the efficacy of a chemotherapeutic agent such as CDDP

    Key-hole Laminotomy (Translaminar Microsurgical Approach) for Upper Lumbar Herniated Disc

    Objective The conventional microsurgical interlaminar approach for upper lumbar disc herniation (LDH) can increase the risk of postoperative spinal instability due to excessive laminectomy and/or facetectomy. The authors present a key-hole laminotomy (microsurgical translaminar approach) for upper LDH, which allows less destructive laminotomy, and review the results of this surgical technique. Methods Between 2007 and 2014, 20 patients underwent single level discectomy in the upper lumbar spine (L1-2 or L2-3) using a microsurgical translaminar approach. Mean patient age was 58.0±12.0 years and minimum follow-up was 1.0 years. A retrospective review of clinical and radiological data was conducted. Results Back pain and leg pain were improved from an average of 4.9±1.1 and 8.3±0.9 to 0.9±0.7 and 0.9±1.6 at 1-year postoperatively (p<0.001). According to Odom’s criteria, symptom improvement was significant at 1-year follow-up visits. Disc height at the operated level was decreased from 8.9±1.9 to 8.2±2.3 mm (p=0.043), and, total lumbar lordotic angle was increased from 26.8±10.8 to 36.6±10.6° (p=0.021). Excepting two case of post-operative additional nerve root block for remnant leg pain and recurrence there were no surgical complications. Conclusion The key-hole laminotomy for upper LDH achieved favorable clinical outcomes without iatrogenic instability. The described key-hole laminotomy provides a safe, effective alternative to the conventional interlaminar approach for upper LDH

    Effects of Rotor-Rotor Interaction on the Wake Structure and Thrust Generation of a Quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

    In this paper, the effects of rotor-rotor interaction on the wake structure and thrust generation of a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) are experimentally investigated in the rotor tip Reynolds number range of 34000 ??? 54000. The interaction strength is manipulated by varying the number of rotating rotors and the normalized rotor separation distance. A stronger rotor-rotor interaction places the inner tip vortices between rotors closer to each other, forming an upflow region through vortex pairing and intensifying the turbulence intensity between rotors. To comprehensively evaluate the effect of interaction on the wake structure, we propose a modified Landgrebe???s model that accurately describes the wake boundary of UAV, given the number of rotating rotors and the normalized rotor separation distance. The wake analysis based on the model shows that the stronger the rotor-rotor interaction, the less the wake contracts and the closer the vena contracta moves to the rotor-tip path plane. The momentum theory combined with the modified Landgrebe???s model shows that the loss of axial momentum transfer due to the wake inclination is insufficient to account for the thrust loss caused by the rotor-rotor interaction. This paper shows that the shift of the inner tip vortex away from the rotational axis and the corresponding increase of induced axial velocity followed by a decrease in the local effective angle of attack is another important mechanism for the thrust loss

    Environmental impacts comparison between on-site vs. prefabricated just-in-time (prefab-JIT) rebar supply in construction projects

    In the on-site rebar delivery system, as the common method of rebar supply in the construction industry, reinforced steel bars are delivered in large batches from supplier's facilities through contractor's warehouse to the construction site. Rebars are then fabricated on-site and installed after assembly. In the new delivery system, called prefabrication Just-In-Time (prefab-JIT) system, the off-site cut and bend along with frequent rebar delivery to the site are applied in order to improve the process and increase its efficiency. The main objective of this paper is to assess and compare the environmental impacts resulting from the air emissions associated with the two rebar delivery systems in a case study construction project. Environmental impact categories of interest include global warming, acidification, eutrophication, and smog formation. A process-based cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment methodology is applied to perform the analysis. The results show that the prefab-JIT rebar delivery system causes less contribution to all mentioned environmental impact categories compared with a traditional on-site delivery system

    Enhancement of phase separation in the InGaN layer for self-assembled In-rich quantum dots

    The enhancement of phase separation in the InGaN layer grown on a GaN layer with a rough surface was investigated for the formation of self-assembled In-rich quantum dots(QDs) in the InGaN layer. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that In-rich QDs with a size of 2–5 nm were formed even in an InGaN layer with a low indium content, and a layer thickness less than the critical thickness. The room-temperature photoluminescence(PL) spectrum of this layer showed emission peaks corresponding to In-rich QDs. The temperature-dependent PL spectra showed dominant peak shifts to the lower energy side, indicating that the self-assembled In-rich QDs are formed in the InGaN layer grown on a rough GaNsurface and that the carriers are localized in In-rich QDs
